Our discussion focused on how we can move into becoming a community of faith (consisting of several worshiping communities) that makes the practice of Radical Hospitality a number one priority. I have always linked Radical Hospitality with Extravagant Generosity (one example). Modeling Extravagant Generosity as a congregation is important for us to grow this holy trait in individuals. Nelson Searcy has written an article, Creating a Culture of Generosity, that gives some practical pointers from his own church. The article ends with some questions for reflection and discussion.

During our discussion I made some notes which I have been asked to share. So here they are. They are not pretty, complete, or polished. But I trust they will trigger memories and elicit responses, conversations, and the implementation of new ideas for practicing Radical Hospitality.

In addressing Issues of hospitality, how does each team plays a role?
Identifying problems - what hospitality issues keep popping up?
Getting the idea across that even if you serve an hour and your services aren't needed doesn't mean your time was wasted. "They also serve who only stand and wait." (John Milton)
The importance of modeling Radical Hospitality (leaders first, members and regular attenders next)
How can we connect better (and help others to connect better) with our mission, vision, values?
Procedures in Care Ministry includes Guests and Members
First Impressions - Front Door Team - greeters / signage
ALL the doors.
Inside the Door - greeters - ushers - escorts
greeters inside and outside before and after services

Guest Hospitality Team

Initial Contact with gift and information -

2nd visit gets a postcard

3rd visit contact with Fellowship Friend

Fellowship friends - take on a family for three months - assigned after third visit

How to join - Is it too easy to join
Need to beef up new member procedure?
What do we want to cover at membership classes?
When and how often should we have the classes?

Announcements
* a nursery is available for you...
* bathrooms
Fixed column in bulletin about basic information and how to find things

Let the conversation begin. Throughout the world there are many people who live on beans and rices and their only meal during the day.

As you plan your meals of beans and rice, save the money you would have spent otherwise for our children's missions project with Stop Hunger Now. Please consider honoring such people by making a contribution to a worthy Mission organization in your loved one's name at the World Market Alternative Christmas event. The World Market will take place on the front lawn of Horne Memorial United Methodist church on Sunday morning 11/23/08. The Market will be open before and after each of the 3 worship services. You'll have the opportunity to come and learn about 6 different missions organizations and make a donation to one or more of them. For each donation, you'll receive a card that describes the mission. You will also receive a small gift which you can give to your loved one along with the mission card.

The 6 missions included in this year's World Market are as close as Johnston county and as far away as Haiti and Liberia. You may choose from the following missions:

The Sustainable Agriculture Program in Liberia

The Smithfield Rescue Mission

Heifer Project International

Project Access of Johnston County

The Ryan Epps Orphanage in Haiti

The MERCI Center in Goldboro

Please come join us and honor your loved ones this Christmas while also making a difference in the lives of others.

Missions Team Report

The following notes are from last nights Missions Meeting, along with actions/results (where applicable):

It was agreed that Horne UMC would work to raise funds for building a home in Haiti. Ms Helen is organizing a total of 11 homes to be sponsored by area churches and requests that Horne raise $3,200 for this purpose. An exact count of the amount already raised is forthcoming, now that the church computer is running.

The Clayton Harvest Festival had gross proceeds of ~$4,900. UMM is finalizing expenses, but preliminary figures show about $2,500 will be provided to Missions.

Helen brought up the opportunity to sell Attractions Books (these were sold by Youth in the past 2 years). Patrick has secured 100 books (80 Johnston County/20 Triangle). We will begin a campaign to sell these books for $25 each at all upcoming events/meals and solicit selling help from church members willing to sell a few at work, to family and in their neighborhoods. Missions keeps $10 for each book sold. Click HERE to support Horne Memorial UMC Missions Committee!

Voted that the remaining 2008 dinners will go to fund raise for the Haiti House and that 2009 dinners will go toward "Stop Hunder Now".

There are 2 containers almost ready for shipment to Haiti, Ms. Helen is working the system to find ways to get them there. We are looking for 4 people to share this responsibility. We would like to find another person to help in our art class, games, middle school and high school classes during the 9:45 hour. There will be a teachers meeting on Thursday, Aug. 28 at 7:00 in the room next to the downstairs kitchen. The new church year will begin on September 7th. Please prayerfully consider these opportunities to help lead our children toward the Lord. You can contact Roxanne Spears at 359-9985.

Student Ministries (Grades 7 to 12)

Our 7th - 12th grade student ministry is on Wednesday's from 6:30pm - 8:00pm.
Please join us to learn about all our new ministry and mission opportunities.

S.P.R.I.N.T. (Study, Pray, Respond, Interact, Nurture and Transform): This is our Wednesday night spiritual formation program.
We begin by gathering in the fellowship hall for worship music, community and prayer. Members of our circle donated time, money, and talents to paint the nursery and adjoining restroom. A friend of one of our members, painted the inspiring mural. We have several more members that are in the process of painting the mural for the restroom. We have more updates for the nursery coming soon. There is a wish list on the door to the nursery if you would like to help us!

This year we met our annual pledge for the Haiti Orphanage, contributed to MeFine Foundation, and Harbor House. We also are collecting baby items for the New Hope Pregnancy Center. There is a collection box in the walk way if you would like to help us. We are collecting new and gently used baby items and clothes up to 24 months and new or gently used maternity clothes. In the fall, we will be hosting a parents night out on November 7th. Look for more details in the upcoming months.

We always welcome new members. We normally meet the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 6:30 at different restaurants in the area. If you would like to join us please contact Sara Barrett at 919-553-9789 or paisleyaly@embarqmail.com to see which restaurant we are meeting at that month.

Greetings from Mingo County!

Youth at West Virginia (ASP, 2008)
Originally uploaded by horneumc
Team “Rocket” (Jodie S., Burt S., Andy B., Matthew C., Jacob S., Phillip W., Price R., & Jordyn J.)

Greetings from Mingo County! Our group is replacing the floor band joists on the outside of a trailer. Our owner is “Miss Billie” who is a sweet lady with 13 cats and one dog. Burt has taught us all a lot about building and about the correct use of power and manual tools. Jodie helps hold things and reminds us to use our safety glasses. Andy, Matt, Jacob & Phillip have been busy pulling off the old bands and cutting and replacing them. Price and Jordyn have also done some sawing and hammering. Yesterday Price and Phillip helped Miss Billie in her garden and today Jordyn and Price helped her fix dinner for us. We had a delicious meatloaf, mashed potatoes, green beans, homemade biscuits and peach cobbler. What a treat! We are accomplishing a lot, but will be glad to be home.

Team “Peaches” (Laura J, Scott W., Elisabeth W., Dannielle M., Justin N., Marshall T., Matt H., Alex N., Nathen D., Alex L.

Our team has dug a 107’ long drainage ditch that goes from 18” to 29” in depth. We’ve also made great progress on our soffit and facia work. Our homeowner is very sweet and doesn’t know a stranger. She baked us brownies too!

Worship at Horne

‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. The first is to “love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.” We believe that worship is the principle means by which Christian believers fulfill this commandment.

Horne Memorial UMC offers worship services at 8:30, 9:45 and 11:00 each Sunday morning. And in unity of this Godhead there are three persons, of one substance, power, and eternity—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.

Article II—Of the Word, or Son of God, Who Was Made Very Man

The Son, who is the Word of the Father, the very and eternal God, of one substance with the Father, took man's nature in the womb of the blessed Virgin; so that two whole and perfect natures, that is to say, the Godhead and Manhood, were joined together in one person, never to be divided; whereof is one Christ, very God and very Man, who truly suffered, was crucified, dead, and buried, to reconcile his Father to us, and to be a sacrifice, not only for original guilt, but also for actual sins of men.

Article III—Of the Resurrection of Christ

Christ did truly rise again from the dead, and took again his body, with all things appertaining to the perfection of man's nature, wherewith he ascended into heaven, and there sitteth until he return to judge all men at the last day.

Article IV—Of the Holy Ghost

The Holy Ghost, proceeding from the Father and the Son, is of one substance, majesty, and glory with the Father and the Son, very and eternal God.

Article V—Of the Sufficiency of the Holy Scriptures for Salvation

The Holy Scripture containeth all things necessary to salvation; so that whatsoever is not read therein, nor may be proved thereby, is not to be required of any man that it should be believed as an article of faith, or be thought requisite or necessary to salvation. In the name of the Holy Scripture we do understand those canonical books of the Old and New Testament of whose authority was never any doubt in the church. The names of the canonical books are:

Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, Ruth, The First Book of Samuel, The Second Book of Samuel, The First Book of Kings, The Second Book of Kings, The First Book of Chronicles, The Second Book of Chronicles, The Book of Ezra, The Book of Nehemiah, The Book of Esther, The Book of Job, The Psalms, The Proverbs, Ecclesiastes or the Preacher, Cantica or Songs of Solomon, Four Prophets the Greater, Twelve Prophets the Less.

All the books of the New Testament, as they are commonly received, we do receive and account canonical.

Article VI—Of the Old Testament

The Old Testament is not contrary to the New; for both in the Old and New Testament everlasting life is offered to mankind by Christ, who is the only Mediator between God and man, being both God and Man. Wherefore they are not to be heard who feign that the old fathers did look only for transitory promises. Although the law given from God by Moses as touching ceremonies and rites doth not bind Christians, nor ought the civil precepts thereof of necessity be received in any commonwealth; yet notwithstanding, no Christian whatsoever is free from the obedience of the commandments which are called moral.

Article VII—Of Original or Birth Sin

Original sin standeth not in the following of Adam (as the Pelagians do vainly talk), but it is the corruption of the nature of every man, that naturally is engendered of the offspring of Adam, whereby man is very far gone from original righteousness, and of his own nature inclined to evil, and that continually.

Article VIII—Of Free Will

The condition of man after the fall of Adam is such that he cannot turn and prepare himself, by his own natural strength and works, to faith, and calling upon God; wherefore we have no power to do good works, pleasant and acceptable to God, without the grace of God by Christ preventing us, that we may have a good will, and working with us, when we have that good will.

Article IX—Of the Justification of Man

We are accounted righteous before God only for the merit of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, by faith, and not for our own works or deservings. Wherefore, that we are justified by faith, only, is a most wholesome doctrine, and very full of comfort.

Article X—Of Good Works

Although good works, which are the fruits of faith, and follow after justification, cannot put away our sins, and endure the severity of God's judgment; yet are they pleasing and acceptable to God in Christ, and spring out of a true and lively faith, insomuch that by them a lively faith may be as evidently known as a tree is discerned by its fruit.

Article XI—Of Works of Supererogation

Voluntary works—besides, over and above God's commandments—which they call works of supererogation, cannot be taught without arrogancy and impiety. For by them men do declare that they do not only render unto God as much as they are bound to do, but that they do more for his sake than of bounden duty is required; whereas Christ saith plainly: When you have done all that is commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants.

Article XII—Of Sin After Justification

Not every sin willingly committed after justification is the sin against the Holy Ghost, and unpardonable. Wherefore, the grant of repentance is not to be denied to such as fall into sin after justification. After we have received the Holy Ghost, we may depart from grace given, and fall into sin, and, by the grace of God, rise again and amend our lives. And therefore they are to be condemned who say they can no more sin as long as they live here; or deny the place of forgiveness to such as truly repent.

Article XIII—Of the Church

The visible church of Christ is a congregation of faithful men in which the pure Word of God is preached, and the Sacraments duly administered according to Christ's ordinance, in all those things that of necessity are requisite to the same.

Article XIV—Of Purgatory

The Romish doctrine concerning purgatory, pardon, worshiping, and adoration, as well of images as of relics, and also invocation of saints, is a fond thing, vainly invented, and grounded upon no warrant of Scripture, but repugnant to the Word of God.

Article XV—Of Speaking in the Congregation in Such a Tongue as the People Understand

It is a thing plainly repugnant to the Word of God, and the custom of the primitive church, to have public prayer in the church, or to minister the Sacraments, in a tongue not understood by the people.

Article XVI—Of the Sacraments

Sacraments ordained of Christ are not only badges or tokens of Christian men's profession, but rather they are certain signs of grace, and God's good will toward us, by which he doth work invisibly in us, and doth not only quicken, but also strengthen and confirm, our faith in him.

There are two Sacraments ordained of Christ our Lord in the Gospel; that is to say, Baptism and the Supper of the Lord.

Those five commonly called sacraments, that is to say, confirmation, penance, orders, matrimony, and extreme unction, are not to be counted for Sacraments of the Gospel; being such as have partly grown out of the corrupt following of the apostles, and partly are states of life allowed in the Scriptures, but yet have not the like nature of Baptism and the Lord's Supper, because they have not any visible sign or ceremony ordained of God.

The Sacraments were not ordained of Christ to be gazed upon, or to be carried about; but that we should duly use them. And in such only as worthily receive the same, they have a wholesome effect or operation; but they that receive them unworthily, purchase to themselves condemnation, as St. Paul saith.

Article XVII—Of Baptism

Baptism is not only a sign of profession and mark of difference whereby Christians are distinguished from others that are not baptized; but it is also a sign of regeneration or the new birth. The Baptism of young children is to be retained in the Church.

Article XVIII—Of the Lord's Supper

The Supper of the Lord is not only a sign of the love that Christians ought to have among themselves one to another, but rather is a sacrament of our redemption by Christ's death; insomuch that, to such as rightly, worthily, and with faith receive the same, the bread which we break is a partaking of the body of Christ; and likewise the cup of blessing is a partaking of the blood of Christ.

Transubstantiation, or the change of the substance of bread and wine in the Supper of our Lord, cannot be proved by Holy Writ, but is repugnant to the plain words of Scripture, overthroweth the nature of a sacrament, and hath given occasion to many superstitions.

The body of Christ is given, taken, and eaten in the Supper, only after a heavenly and spiritual manner. And the mean whereby the body of Christ is received and eaten in the Supper is faith.

The Sacrament of the Lord's Supper was not by Christ's ordinance reserved, carried about, lifted up, or worshiped.

Article XIX—Of Both Kinds

The cup of the Lord is not to be denied to the lay people; for both the parts of the Lord's Supper, by Christ's ordinance and commandment, ought to be administered to all Christians alike.

Article XX—Of the One Oblation of Christ, Finished upon the Cross

The offering of Christ, once made, is that perfect redemption, propitiation, and satisfaction for all the sins of the whole world, both original and actual; and there is none other satisfaction for sin but that alone. Wherefore the sacrifice of masses, in the which it is commonly said that the priest doth offer Christ for the quick and the dead, to have remission of pain or guilt, is a blasphemous fable and dangerous deceit.

Article XXI—Of the Marriage of Ministers

The ministers of Christ are not commanded by God's law either to vow the estate of single life, or to abstain from marriage; therefore it is lawful for them, as for all other Christians, to marry at their own discretion, as they shall judge the same to serve best to godliness.

Article XXII—Of the Rites and Ceremonies of Churches

It is not necessary that rites and ceremonies should in all places be the same, or exactly alike; for they have been always different, and may be changed according to the diversity of countries, times, and men's manners, so that nothing be ordained against God's Word. Whosoever, through his private judgment, willingly and purposely doth openly break the rites and ceremonies of the church to which he belongs, which are not repugnant to the Word of God, and are ordained and approved by common authority, ought to be rebuked openly, that others may fear to do the like, as one that offendeth against the common order of the church, and woundeth the consciences of weak brethren.

Every particular church may ordain, change, or abolish rites and ceremonies, so that all things may be done to edification.

Article XXIII—Of the Rulers of the United States of America

The President, the Congress, the general assemblies, the governors, and the councils of state, as the delegates of the people, are the rulers of the United States of America, according to the division of power made to them by the Constitution of the United States and by the constitutions of their respective states. And the said states are a sovereign and independent nation, and ought not to be subject to any foreign jurisdiction.

Article XXIV—Of Christian Men's Goods

The riches and goods of Christians are not common as touching the right, title, and possession of the same, as some do falsely boast. Notwithstanding, every man ought, of such things as he possesseth, liberally to give alms to the poor, according to his ability.

Article XXV—Of a Christian Man's Oath

As we confess that vain and rash swearing is forbidden Christian men by our Lord Jesus Christ and James his apostle, so we judge that the Christian religion doth not prohibit, but that a man may swear when the magistrate requireth, in a cause of faith and charity, so it be done according to the prophet's teaching, in justice, judgment, and truth.

[The following Article from the Methodist Protestant Discipline is placed here by the Uniting Conference (1939). It was not one of the Articles of Religion voted upon by the three churches.]

Of Sanctification

Sanctification is that renewal of our fallen nature by the Holy Ghost, received through faith in Jesus Christ, whose blood of atonement cleanseth from all sin; whereby we are not only delivered from the guilt of sin, but are washed from its pollution, saved from its power, and are enabled, through grace, to love God with all our hearts and to walk in his holy commandments blameless.

[The following provision was adopted by the Uniting Conference (1939). This statement seeks to interpret to our churches in foreign lands Article XXIII of the Articles of Religion. It is a legislative enactment but is not a part of the Constitution. (See Judicial Council Decisions 41, 176, and Decision 6, Interim Judicial Council.)]

Of the Duty of Christians to the Civil Authority

It is the duty of all Christians, and especially of all Christian ministers, to observe and obey the laws and commands of the governing or supreme authority of the country of which they are citizens or subjects or in which they reside, and to use all laudable means to encourage and enjoin obedience to the powers that be.

From The Book of Discipline of The United Methodist Church - 2004. To fulfill this mission, Horne Memorial offers opportunities for Spiritual Growth through the caring commitment of each and every member in an atmosphere of love and Christian fellowship.

We understand our mission to spring forth from the Great Commission given us by our Lord Jesus Christ: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19-20).

We seek to reconnect people to God, making them firm believers who live fully devoted lives to Jesus Christ.

Implementing Our Mission through Ministry

We understand our ministry to revolve around the two greatest commandments: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself” (Luke 10:27).

Some of our ministries focus on the first commandment, helping us to “love the Lord [our] God.” Some ministries exist to aid us in our love of neighbor. Other ministries overlap.

Being a fully devoted follower of Jesus Christ means we strive to evaluate our lives and actions by these two commandments. We worship God to glorify Him. We serve God by loving and serving our neighbor. “He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8).

A Disciple is a Fully Devoted Follower of Jesus Christ

A disciple is one who moves from being a believer to being a follower of Jesus. We recognize that God freely offers us salvation in Jesus Christ when we accept Him as our Savior. We recognize that this gift of God’s grace (traditionally called justification) is due to no merit on our part. We confess Jesus with our lips and so are saved (Romans 10:9). But, the Holy Spirit moves us beyond this passiveness in our lives. We recognize that we must surrender our wills to Christ and make Him Lord in our lives. This is a lifelong process of trusting fully in the grace of God to lead us in our growth on love and service to both God and our neighbor (traditionally called sanctification).

As Disciples We Love God

The greatest expression of our love of God is to glorify Him and to praise His Name in worship. The Holy Spirit gathers us into a worshiping community. While worship of God can and does take place in personal and family settings, all disciples are called to worship God in the context of Christian community. We offer a variety of opportunities to worship God in the context of community. The style and form of the worship is not as important as the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. “True worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such as these to worship him” (John 4:23).

As Disciples We Love Our Neighbor

God has placed us in community. We live in a community of faith, with other brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ. Jesus has given us clear direction in our relationship to these brothers and sisters. “I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another” (John 13:34).

9 Whoever says, “I am in the light,” while hating a brother or sister, is still in the darkness. 10 Whoever loves a brother or sister lives in the light, and in such a person there is no cause for stumbling. 11 But whoever hates another believer is in the darkness, walks in the darkness, and does not know the way to go, because the darkness has brought on blindness. (1 John 2:9-11).

God has also placed us in the larger community of believers and unbelievers. He has done this because of His great love for all people: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life” (John 3:16). God calls us to be a people who live out our faith in action: “If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, and one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill,’ and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that?” (James 2:15-16). We act on this call to serve by our involvement in local and foreign missions and in our evangelical outreach to our community.

God calls us to be evangelists – bearers of the Good News of Jesus Christ (see Acts 10:34-43). His message of salvation is offered to all people, just as He loves all people (John 3:16), and we are to witness to this love – this Good News – that others may confess Jesus as Lord and live (Romans 10:9; Ephesian 2:8-10).

Through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit, we seek to reconnect unbelievers to their Creator and include them into our fellowship of love and service. This completes the ongoing cycle of making disciples, which is the mission of the Church.

Staffing Our Ministry

We believe that all Christians are called to be disciples, and all disciples are called into the ministry of Jesus Christ. While we find is necessary to maintain a paid staff to help provide the framework of our work, we believe that the real work of ministry is undertaken by all who are disciples of Jesus Christ.

All decisions concerning involving staffing (both paid and unpaid staff) and the utilization of resources (staff, finances, facilities) shall be judged by their effectiveness in helping us fulfill the mission we have in Jesus Christ. Our pastoral and teaching staff work to equip us for the work of building God’s kingdom and edifying the Body of Christ (see Ephesians 2:11-12). The Coordinator of Lay Ministries and members of our Committee of Lay Ministries are committed to providing opportunities for learning and enrichment to persons of all ages in this community of faith and to engage them in the mission of the Church.

Training, studying, and preparing for ministry is vital, but can never be a substitute for ministry. As disciples we seek to grow in our knowledge so we might grow in our service.

A Final Word

If we are not reaching out and touching the lives of others we are failing at our mission. If we are not reaching out and drawing others into a relationship with Christ, we are failing at our mission. We we are not enfolding others into the community of faith, we are failing at our mission. We exist to make disciples of Jesus Christ. May that mission guide us in all that we do.

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Sarah Norris, Church Secretary

Sarah Norris

As Secretary and Office Manager, I keep track of church records, the calendar, office equipment, and facility usage. We shall also consider how he used lay people in ministry, and what implications we might see for our lay pastoral care program at New Hope Church.

Wesley’s understanding of salvation and the work of grace is always to be understood as the foundation of what follows. In reading Wesley, one can see his understanding of the primacy of God’s grace at work in all he does. What I wish to consider, in particular, are Wesley’s precedents for the type of ministries that we wish to implement in this parish, the expectations that Wesley had for them, and to what degree his band and class meetings can serve as a model for what we will do.

Putting people into classes and bands was not unique to Wesley, for he had seen evidence of their effectiveness. The concept fit into his understanding of sin and repentance, as well as growth in perfect love and sanctification. His was a method built on his theological foundation, but with anthropological concerns.

In the “General Rules” and the “Band Societies”1 one can see how Wesley organized the Methodists into Societies, Classes and Bands. He talks about what is expected of the Methodists. This involved doing no harm and avoiding evil, doing good, and attending the ordinances of God Church: Eucharist, daily service of the Word, private prayer, scripture reading, and fasting). But the real genius of the method comes out in “A Plain Account of the People Called Methodist.”2 Here Wesley explains the origins of not only the different gatherings (societies, classes, bands) and why they were necessary, but the different positions of people that he had to help him in his work.

As mentioned above, Wesley’s own theology shows evidence of the influence of Catholicism and Protestantism. Wesley was born on June 28, 1703, to a devout high-church rector at Epworth and his wife, both the children of non-conformist clergy. In 1714, the Duke of Buckingham provided a scholarship to send Wesley to Charterhouse School. In 1720 he matriculated at Christ Church College at Oxford University. In 1725 Wesley underwent a change that is sometimes considered his conversion experience. It began with his encounter of Bishop Taylor’s Rules and Exercises of Holy Living and Dying and Thomas à Kempis’ Christian Pattern. The next year Wesley read for the first time William Law’s Christian Perfection. This had a profound impact on his life. He had discovered what might be styled as “ethical piety,” and Law’s works became one of the main sources of his tutelage. In 1726, when Wesley became a Fellow of Lincoln College at Oxford, he involved himself in his brother’s student circle dubbed “The Holy Club,” later to be known as the Oxford Methodists. These students, under Wesley’s leadership, became disciples of Law’s quest for perfection.

After Wesley’s Aldersgate experience his relationship with Law began to cool, but Law’s early works remained a strong influence in his life and teachings. Wesley was impressed by the morality of Law’s writings. His blend of ethics and piety would take a forefront position in the social aspects of Wesley’s evangelical thrust. Even though he could preach “salvation by faith,” Wesley would always stress the importance of how one lived as evidence of God’s grace working in the individual. Even though the “only condition” to join a Methodist Society was “a desire to flee from the wrath to come,” individuals were “expected to evidence their desire of salvation.” This was first shown by “avoiding evil of every kind,” and secondly, “by doing good.” It was also expected that they show evidence of their desire “by attending upon all the ordinances of God.”3

But there was more to being a Methodist in Wesley’s day than being a member of a society. Members were divided into classes, smaller groups of people, to aid them in their edification and growth. Beyond this, bands were formed for those who desired to continue in their quest for Christian perfection. These bands were organized by age, sex, and marital status into groups of about five to ten members, according to Watson,4 or from four to five members, according to Nightingale.5 Designed for the purpose of fellowship and spiritual oversight, a leader was chosen from among the members of the band.6 Watson states that as the class meeting developed, the separation of the class from the bands became less noticeable.7

The class meeting arose out of the difficulty in visiting all the Methodists for various reasons. The bands sprung from a desire of members to have a “closer union” and more direction in their spiritual development. Leaders were chosen (as the name implies—no fancy titles here) to lead the classes and bands. The Assistants (to the Ministers) tended to many of the functions of worship, etc. in the absence of the ministers. The Stewards (of temporal matters) handled the finances of the societies and tended to the needs of the sick. When these responsibilities became too great, special Visitors were chosen to visit the sick three times each week to inquire into the state of their souls. Wesley specifically compares this office to the diaconate as it is understood in the New Testament. Finally, Schoolmasters (and mistresses) were chosen to help in the education of the young. It is interesting that today most of these functions are entrusted to the pastor of the parish without this kind of organized assistance.8

One of the issues facing the United Methodist Church today (which consequently affects all of our congregations) is the struggle we are having with the nature of “ordained ministry.” This is evident in the time that we have been spending on this issue over the last quadrennium. One aspect of this ongoing struggle is trying to reconcile the Wesleyan model for ministry with contemporary problems and issues. Many of the aspects of the Wesleyan model (e.g., the itineracy) are simply redefined in an effort to make them intelligible for our own time. Wesley noted that Roman Catholic and Protestant understandings of pastoral authority went to opposite extremes. He desired to have an understanding of pastoral authority that somehow managed to reconcile the two poles.9

As Wesley writes his understanding of pastoral authority, he makes a distinction between the parochial pastor of a given parish and a spiritual guide that one voluntarily seeks out and makes one’s own. Wesley argues that his understanding of pastoral authority only applies when the “pastor” is the person who fits in the second category. One may not be forced to be obedient to a parish priest simply due to one’s birth in a particular parish. Each Christian must seek out a spiritual guide and, having chosen one, the Christian becomes obedient to that person’s guidance. This spiritual guide is a person whose method and character are marked by gentleness.10 Because of the nature of Methodist Societies in the 18th century, this spiritual guide was usually the pastor (often a lay pastor) of the society11 or a band or class leader (also a lay person). Eventually, the responsibilities of the local pastors were assumed by the elders who were traveling less as the congregations were growing larger. One could argue that we have many of the same problems in our denomination today that Wesley saw in his own church (the Church of England) in the 18th century.

Wesley exercised complete control over the appointment of pastors in his own day.12 Individual societies had no say in the matter and were forbidden to even offer an evaluation of their pastors that Wesley said must be a type of peer review and accountability.13 This, of course, can still be seen in our contemporary conferences during the executive session when the character of the clergy is passed on by the district superintendents. Wesley maintained considerable authority over both the pastors and the societies under his control. Many of his letters were written to pastors for encouragement or reproof.14

How did Wesley understand his role as a supervisor of lay ministers? His supervisory role was obviously an important expression of his desire to help provide pastoral leadership to so many people. He continued to be engaged in personal ministry to people (especially evident in his letters). How did Wesley train his ministers? The answer to this question remains largely unknown.

I believe that much of Wesley’s understanding of assurance, sanctification and perfect love are already a part of our faith system. How can we faithfully integrate this faith into what we plan to do in this parish? In an age of ecumenical dialogue, and in a parish where fewer than 30% of the people grew up in Methodism, I think Wesley’s thought can best be translated into modern idiom. True, it will no longer be just Wesley’s thought and belief—but, he will continue to serve as a major mentor to the theological foundation in all we do in this parish. We are not considering the implementation of Wesley’s structure of the bands and classes in a program of lay ministry. It is, however, evident that the classes and bands, as well as the lay positions of Leaders, Assistants, Stewards, and Visitors indicate Wesley’s use of laity in ministry.

____________

1 See Rupert E. 919-553-6464, ext. 21, to schedule a Sunday to join the church.
New! You may complete the Church Membership Form ONLINE.

A copy of our Baptismal/Confirmation/Church Membership service (with commentary), The Service of Christian Baptism is available as a PDF document for you to read.

By Profession of Faith and Baptism
If you are not now a baptized Christian, one of our pastors will be happy to discuss the meaning of the Sacrament with you in your home or at the church at your convenience.

By Reaffirmation of Faith
If you once was a member of a Christian Church, but who have not been active for a long period of time you will be received by Reaffirmation of Faith in which you renew your baptismal and church membership vows.

By Transfer From Another United Methodist Church
Check the “Wish to Join” box on the Pew Pad or the Visitor Information Card and you will receive our Membership Information Form (or you can just download it here or complete it online). You may request that we write for your letter of transfer — it is not necessary for you to write your former church, we can handle the details of transfer for you! You may also call Ginny Williams, our Membership Secretary at 919-553-6464, ext. 21.

By Transfer From Another Christian Denomination
The process is very much like the one above. Since you are already baptized and confirmed, these steps will not be repeated. You will be asked to take the one vow taken by all members of the United Methodist Church: “Will you be loyal to the United Methodist Church and uphold it by your prayers, your presence, your gifts and your service?”

Transfer of Your Membership From a Denomination That Will Not Accept Your Transferring Across Denominational Lines
Your baptism is accepted. You will be received in a process called Renewal of Vows, similar to the Reaffirmation of Faith.

Membership Information Form
This form must be completed and turned in to Sarah Norris. You may mail it (Horne Memorial UMC, PO Box 475, Clayton, NC 27528), fax it (919-882-9848), place it in an envelope marked “Sarah Norris,” and drop in the offering plate, bring it by the church office, or complete it online.

Membership Classes
We encourage all people interested in joining Horne Memorial to attend our Membership Inquiry Classes which are held periodically. More information on these classes may be found in a separate brochure. Look for the schedule in the Horne Happenings.

Any Questions
If you have any questions, please contact our Membership Secretary, Sarah Norris, at 919-553-6464, ext. 21.

Download Adobe Reader to read PDF files.

Core Values of Horne Memorial

With Jesus Christ as our Cornerstone, we seek to be Living Stones being built into Church of God. We are called to have the mind of Christ as we seek to be faithful to the call we have been given to live and work as the Church. As sinners who have been redeemed by God through Jesus Christ, God has shared with us the awesome ministry of reconciliation - reaching out to all of our neighbors in the love God has first shown us.

For us to be that Church and for us to be the people who make up that community of faith, we are committed to being...

...prayerful. We acknowledge our dependence upon God alone and we begin every action by seeking God’s guidance and wisdom. We cover everything – every act of ministry and mission in prayer.

...authentic. The Holy Spirit is present in our lives. Through His power we move toward lives of perfect honesty, integrity, purity, and truth. We seek to follow the example of our Lord in being self-giving as individuals and as a community.

time, gifts, talents

mission, service and giving

...grateful. In every act -- in every decision we make – we remember with gratitude and thanksgiving that God has blessed us so we might be a blessing to others.

...learning.
